Jim Holmes — I told you so

After the Bohemia hearing I wrote Supervisor Jim Holmes expressing my distress about his speech and position on the prime issues over which he is now so irritated. Two quotes from that letter: “It is a governing principle of nature, that the agency which can produce most good, when perverted from its proper aim, is most productive of evil. It behooves the well-intentioned, therefore, vigorously to watch the tendency of even their most highly-prized institutions, since that which was established in the interests of the right, may so easily become the agent of the wrong.” — James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851) American novelist Americans should be giving priority to improving services, such as schools, roads, affordable housing and public transportation, rather than big-box stores. “The time to guard against corruption and tyranny is before they shall have gotten hold on us. It is better to keep the wolf out of the fold, than to trust to drawing his teeth and talons after he shall have entered.” Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) “Notes on the State of Virginia” 1782 Perhaps the “corruption and tyranny” that Tom Jefferson quoted in my letter have already taken over in Placer County. The traffic nightmare that will come from having four major big-box stores in North Auburn will be horrific. Supervisor Holmes, unlike me, in order to get to his office and back will fight the traffic of those 10,000-plus daily trips. I’ll be in my home office or taking the scenic route. Dale Smith, Auburn
