Senior Corey Johnson led Del Oro High to a sensational second-place finish at Northern California’s largest wrestling tournament Saturday at Sacramento’s Memorial Audistorium. Johnson defeated Liberty’s Jesse Baldazzo 7-1 to win the 135-pound title at the Tim Brown Invitational. Johnson was one of four Golden Eagles to place at the 85-team tournament. Senior Connor Morgan went 5-1 in the two-day tournament and finished third at 130. His only loss was to eventual champion Cody Howe of Windsor. At 119, sophomore Austin Branum beat the No. 7 seed and the No. 2 seed on his way to a fourth-place showing. Del Oro senior Jesse Stafford posted a 5-2 record to take fifth place. Every Eagle wrestler scored points as they finished behind Buchanon in the team standings. The winning squad from Fresno is the No. 2 ranked team in the state. “We were really thrilled to beat all the teams from our area there,” Del Oro coach Dave Sanchez said.
