Zach Madrigal’s 1-yard quarterback keeper late in the second quarter stood as the winning touchdown and the Placer Junior Hillmen Junior Midgets tuned up for the Sierra Youth Football playoffs Saturday, holding off Bear River 14-8 at Lake of the Pines in their regular season finale. Dustin Edwards scored on a 21-yard run late in the first quarter, but the Bruins wasted little time in tying the score. Edwards finished with nine carries for 55 yards, while Ryan Gray rushed eight times for 50 yards and Tyler Gums had 40 yards on six carries. Placer’s defense of Edwards, Ryan Keller, Frankie O’Neal, Steven Zehm, Andrew Peek, Ryan Gray, Tyler Gums, Juan Medrano, Josh Sweat, Riley Beames and Robby Queen forced Bear River to turn the ball over on downs twice in the second half. The Junior Midgets (5-2) open the playoffs as the No. 3 seed against the Natomas Jr. Nighthawks this weekend. Placer also beat the Junior Bruins in Saturday’s Mighty Mite action, 18-12, avoiding a winless season. Bear River squeaked out a 7-0 win in the Junior Pee-Wee game and routed the Pee-Wee Hillmen 32-6. The Bear River Midgets won 38-31.
