Lady Hillmen storm back, then hang on

The Placer High girls used some lockdown defense and just enough offense to hold off Casa Roble for a 37-33 victory Tuesday night at Earl Crabbe Gym. Senior Bethany Feis scored a game-high 11 points and Kayla Reeves nailed a pair of free throws with 14 seconds left to seal the win for the Lady Hillmen (1-1). The home team trailed 20-15 after committing 16 first-half turnovers. But the Lady Hillmen held the Rams without a field goal in the third quarter to grab a 27-22 lead. Reeves finished with five assists and five steals while Amy Clark chipped in with six points, six rebounds and three steals off the bench. Placer will play in the Whitney tournament, beginning Thursday in Rocklin. In junior varsity action Placer beat Casa Roble 52-33. Chico 53, Bear River 46 at Lake of the Pines — The visiting Panthers pulled away in the fourth quarter as the Bruins dropped their first game of the season. Bear River (1-1) led 38-35 heading into the final frame before Chico surged ahead. Riley Pierson led the Bruins with 13 points and 10 rebounds while Lindsey Harter played well with 12 points and five steals. Emily Guerra passed out three assists and Kelsey Uno added five steals.
