UPDATE 6:14 P.M. 10/19: Police worked on Friday to extract the body of a man who jumped from the Foresthill Bridge shortly after 5 p.m., Placer County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Dave Johnson said.
Someone driving by called police to report a person hanging on the outside railing of the Auburn side of the bridge, Johnson said.
The Placer County Sheriff's Office, California Highway Patrol and Cal Fire responded to the scene. A helicopter was brought in to help locate the body, Johnson said.
"We're trying to figure out how to get down to the body to get it out," he said. "We can see it from the bridge."
The bridge is California's highest, 730 feet above the valley of the American River's north fork.
More details on the identity of the jumper were not available at the time, Johnson said.
"We have them regularly," he said. "But I don't remember when the last one was."
