Leave abortion decision up to women

Regarding the article protesting abortion in Sunday’s Journal (Jan. 22), outlawing abortion will not stop abortion. Just like Prohibition did not stop the sale and consumption of alcohol, but instead moved the sale from the corner bar to the speakeasy controlled by the mobs, so the outlawing of abortion will move it from a clinic, where a woman can receive counseling and medical attention, to a back-alley quack or self-abortion with a coat hanger, and then hope for the best. A lot of these people who want the government to interfere with a woman’s right to choose, are the same ones shouting, “get government out of our way.” Any abortion should not be taken lightly, but there are occasions such as rape, incest, the life and well-being of the mother and/or child, that must be considered. A woman finding herself in such a situation should have the right to make the decision that, one way or another, will affect her the rest of her life. This is no place for government or religious dogma you may not adhere to. John Schroeder, Auburn
