It certainly wasn?t the way the Lincoln High baseball team wanted to finish but a three-game losing streak capped by a 6-4 loss to Colfax Thursday ended their hopes of a Pioneer Valley League title. After defeating Placer 5-1 last week it appeared the Fighting Zebras were in control. However, the Hillmen bounced back to take the second of their two-game series and that started a Lincoln slump. Colfax then did the rest by sweeping the Zebras in the final two games of the regular season. Those last two games we should have won but we didn?t finish,? said Lincoln head coach Troy Peterson said after Thursday?s loss. ?We hit the ball well today but we hit it at them. I?ve got to think about how to get them motivated going into the playoffs and to win in the playoffs. But this team?s very capable of doing it.? Going in as the PVL?s No. 3 seed, Lincoln must travel to Benicia for a game against the Panthers. Benicia (12-3, 20-4 overall) was the Solano County League?s No. 2 seed. The game is scheduled for Monday, 4 p.m. Lincoln had six hits against Colfax in the final game including a double by Ethan Liddle and a home run by Trent Parks. However, where the Falcons? hits found the gaps the Zebras? hits found a Colfax glove. Jake Sola pitched the full seven innings giving up 12 hits and six runs. He struck out three and walked only one batter. Colfax right hander Austin Young had a solid day on the mound getting Lincoln to swing at some bad pitches. Where Young sometimes appeared unable to keep the ball out of the dirt it turned out to be effective in giving Lincoln little to hit. ?I go off of what my coach wants,? said Young of his pitching strategy. ?He tries to call it where he thinks the batter isn?t going to be able to hit it or not hit it as hard as he can.? The strategy worked as the Falcons claimed second in the league race. Colfax 6, Lincoln 4 R H E Falcons 2 0 0 0 2 2 0 ? 6 12 2 Zebras 0 0 0 1 0 1 2 ? 4 3 0
