Likely the largest Auburn area Democratic celebration of President-elect Barack Obama’s inauguration will be at the Shana Laursen estate off of Highway 49.
The Tuesday night celebration has already been sold out with participants paying $20 each to attend. It is co-hosted by the Placer County Democratic Party and Sierra Foothills for Obama with Rob Haswell serving as the emcee.
Kim Haswell, vice president of the Placer County Democratic Party, said a 10-foot screen has been donated and a DVD of Obama’s speech will be shown after dinner.
“We’ve hit our capacity of 175 people already, but we’re following up with people to make sure they’re coming,” Haswell said. “It’s going to be really fun. Everyone’s really excited.”
Laursen held a fundraiser on her property in a structure she calls the “barn,” but it’s not actually barn. On a multimillion-dollar estate, it has a commercial kitchen and has enough room for those attending. She will be making the chili for the meal herself and it will be made from Laursen-raised beef.
The rest of the meal will include salad, roasted carrots, corn bread and purchased pies. Volunteers will help make the salad.
The Laursens were among the first Obama supporters nationwide.
“My husband Andy and I were one of the first 100,000 supporters in the country,” Laursen said. “In the spring of 2007, we helped sponsor an Obama fundraiser in San Francisco.”
Over in Nevada County, Democrats will watch Tuesday inaugural activities at Margarita’s in the Brunswick area, starting at 8:30 a.m. with coffee, tea and pastries available. Evening festivities will be hosted from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. featuring complimentary appetizers. The bar will be open for both parties and the restaurant will open at 11 a.m.
