Local residents get chance to experience ‘controlled chaos’ with Amgen

Auburn resident Lance Loveday takes a ride in the Kelly Benefit Strategies team car during the Stage 3 start of the Amgen Tour of California May 17 in Auburn. Loveday bought the ride at a pre-Amgen auction and was able to ride in the car to the end of Stage 3 in Modesto. “It was one of the coolest things I have ever done as a cycling fan,” Loveday said. “It was thrilling really to be in the car, and right next to the team director and get that level of insight into race strategy. Loveday said riding behind the cyclists with the other team cars was like controlled chaos. “You are always on the verge of hitting somebody, but it never happens,” he said. “It’s a pretty neat experience that not a lot of people get to have.” According to Elizabeth Sands, spokeswoman for Bike Auburn, local residents Scott Graves and Terry McDonald also got a chance to feel the thrill by riding in the Amgen VIP car down to Modesto. ~Bridget Jones
