Man arrested for passing counterfeit $10 bills
By: Gloria Beverage, Gold Country News Service
A Sacramento man was arrested Tuesday for attempting to pass counterfeit $10 bills at two Colfax businesses. Placer County Sheriff's detectives are looking for other possible victims who may have received fake bills from the suspect. Keith Rutherford, 45, was taken into custody with 12 of the fake bills in his possession. He had attempted to pass the bills at Sierra Market and the 76 service station, but clerks at both locations refused to accept them and contacted the Sheriff's Department. Deputy Donald Bohn put out a bulletin describing the suspect and his vehicle. A short time later, Sgt. Troy Minton-Sanders located Rutherford and arrested him. He is in custody at Placer County Jail and is facing charges of two counts of burglary, two counts of making/passing fictitious bills and a parole violation. His bail is set at $70,000. Anyone who believes they may have received a counterfeit bill from Rutherford is asked to call Detective Harroun at (530) 889-7849.
