Mathis racks up a record 9 RBIs for Bruins

Katie Mathis set a Bear River High record, driving in nine runs in the Bruins’ 22-2 win over Mesa Verde in Pioneer Valley League action at Lake of the Pines Thursday. Bear River scored 11 runs in the second inning, highlighted by a Mathis grand slam. The junior, who has verbally committed to San Diego State, went 4-for-4 and doubled home two each in the second and third innings. Courtney Ceo went 4-for-5 with a double and two RBIs, while Brittani Nix and Tori Humbard also drove in two apiece. The Bruins (9-2 overall, 4-1 PVL), who collected 16 hits, host Folsom in a non-league game this afternoon. Lincoln 6, Placer 0 at Lincoln — The Fighting Zebras scored early and often off Hillgals pitcher Melissa Scheller, who struck out three and allowed all six runs in four innings. Brooke Swisley allowed two hits in two innings of relief. Kacy Romero had Placer’s only hit and made several sharp plays at second. The Hillgals (5-9 overall, 1-4 PVL) host Colfax Tuesday. Whitney 4, Colfax 0 at Colfax — Rachel Hopping kept the Falcons at bay, striking out 11 and giving up only three hits. Senior Cara Spence singled twice for Colfax (4-7 overall, 1-3 PVL) and allowed one earned run on five hits in the pitcher’s circle. She walked three and struck out seven.
