Matt Ross a superb athlete

Recently the Sacramento Bee published its High School Athletes of the Year feature. Unfortunately, missing from the robust list of 30 honorable mention nominees was Placer High School’s Matt Ross, who did just about everything possible to deserve nomination. He was the star quarterback/safety for the Cinderella football team that overcame odds and controversy to reach the section championship game for the first time in decades. The day after the football championship, Ross was in the varsity basketball lineup as power forward; he broke a school record with 10 steals in one game. From basketball he went right onto the baseball diamond, where his pitching and all-around play helped the team win the section championship — all while maintaining an excellent grade point average. In an age of year-round specialization, particularly in the major team sports where college scholarships beckon, Ross stands out as one of the most accomplished all-around prep athletes in the area.
