McCann throws 5 TDs, Foresthill Wildfires heating up with Woodland Christian showdown loomingBy: Journal sports staff
The Wildfires are heating up.
And the timing couldn’t be better with a showdown next week against Sacramento Metro Athletic-leading Woodland Christian looming.
On Friday night at Sebastian Stadium in Foresthill, Connor McCann threw for 306 yards and five touchdowns to lead Foresthill past Cristo Rey, 55-12.
“We’re peaking at the right time,” said Wildfires coach Bobby Quintanilla, whose team improved to 5-3, 5-1 in the SMAL. “We came out a little cold because it was senior night but we kicked it into gear a few minutes into the first quarter.”
Wide receiver Matt O’Brien caught four TDs, one for 76 yards, and also had an interception for Foresthill, which lost its only league game against Woodland Christian earlier in the year and has a chance of grabbing a share of the league crown if it can beat the Cardinals in Woodland next week.
Against Cristo Rey, Cody Walden rushed for two Wildfires scores and Jake Sandbank also caught a TD.
On the defensive side of the ball, Foresthill’s Aaron Arnett scooped up a fumble and took it to the house. Quintanilla credited his d-line, including John Huerta, Casey Perez, Brandon Balderas, Ryan Corkrean, Luke Misuraca and Joey Misuraca, for having another big game.
Foresthill running back Marcus Quintanilla is expected back for next week’s showdown at Woodland Christian.
Woodland Christian quarterbacks Anthony Castaneda (ankle) and Josh Truesdell (knee) are both out for the season, so 5-foot-8 sophomore Brenden Rodegerdts will be under center for the Cardinals (6-1, 5-0).
