A Meadow Vista man died Saturday in a single-vehicle crash into a tree near Truckee, the California Highway Patrol said Monday. Killed in the crash was 64-year-old Steven Metzgar, driver of a Lexus ES 300 that drifted off Highway 89 and struck a large tree head-on, according to a Highway Patrol report. The vehicle caught fire but was quickly extinguished by motorists, who had stopped to come to Metzgar’s aid after the crash, the report said. Metzgar suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash, the Highway Patrol said. The fatal crash took place just before 2 p.m., north of Hobart Mills Road. Indications are that the Lexus was traveling at a high rate of speed south on Highway 89, about 10 miles north of Truckee, according to the Highway Patrol report. The collision was still under investigation Monday and it was unknown if drugs or alcohol contributed to the cause of the collision. Metzgar was the lone occupant of the vehicle.
