Surveillance-camera footage of a chainsaw theft at Meadow Vista’s True Value hardware store led to an arrest of a suspect after an extensive manhunt.

The suspect walked off with the chainsaw Monday and a Placer County Sheriff’s Office report said a man matching the thief’s description was sighted Tuesday morning.

The suspect ran from the front of a Meadow Vista home on Volley Road into nearby woods when deputies arrived. An ensuing search that included a K-9 unit failed to turn up the fleeing suspect.

But a few hours later, a new report came in to dispatch from a Meadow Vista resident saying a man matching the suspect’s description was running through backyards on Volley Road, the sheriff’s report said.

Deputies were still in the area and were able to catch up to the suspect inside a motorhome in front of the house on Volley Road where he had earlier been spotted.

Arrested was James E. Daniel, 30, of Meadow Vista. Daniel was booked into Placer County Jail on charges of commercial burglary, resisting arrest and on a $100,000 Placer County warrant for child endangerment. Bail was set at $130,000.

The stolen saw was found at the Volley Road property and returned to the store.
