Measure K not the answer for district

-A +A
I believe that, if Measure K passes, the Newcastle Fire District will, within a few years, go up in smoke. That is because Measure K does not raise sufficient revenue to build a new station or repair the outdated and dangerous old firehouse. Additionally, after three years, Measure K revenues will not even be adequate to maintain the current wages and benefits of our firefighters. Public safety in Newcastle will suffer. Can we really afford Measure K? I don’t think so. I remember watching smoke rise and seeing flames on Quail Hill several years ago. The residents at the top of Quail Hill Road could not go down the road to leave because the fire blocked their path. The Newcastle Fire Department, along with reciprocating agencies, attacked the fire quickly and no lives were lost. Can we really afford Measure K? I don’t think so. Do you own a defibrillator? Years ago, when my father-in-law had a heart attack, the Newcastle firefighters were the first emergency responders to arrive. They don’t need GPS to find him — they know the streets of this community and the quickest way to get to each house. In emergencies like this one, every minute lost can mean the difference between life and death. Can we really afford Measure K? I don’t think so. I urge you to join me in voting no on Measure K. Don’t let the Newcastle Fire District go up in smoke! Terri Tokutomi, Newcastle
