Measure L supplies many rewards

I commend the Auburn Journal for endorsing Measure L, which will be on the ballot this November. The public schools need the support of the local community. Measure L, if passed by the voters, will provide funding for quality reading, writing, math and science instruction to continue, through the support of teachers, hands-on programs, classes and labs. It will help keep class sizes small. Funding to support our school library services will be available. Measure L funding will be controlled locally, by an independent citizen oversight committee, and all monies generated remain in Auburn to be used in our classrooms. In addition to the benefits to our local schools, Measure L has built-in protections for taxpayers. It will cost only $59 per parcel per year, is tax-deductible, will be used locally and cannot be taken by the state. Property owners over the age of 65 may apply for an exemption. This measure automatically expires in five years and cannot be renewed without voter approval. It is a “win-win” situation for the Auburn community. If Measure L passes, the schools remain strong, which in turn will protect our property values, and voters will be rewarded with the knowledge that they were instrumental in supporting a plan to benefit Auburn’s children and our future.
