By Amber Marra Journal Staff Writer As Principal Randy Ittner walks into another year at E.V. Cain Middle School, he’s going to do so with some new faces in more than just the incoming class of sixth-graders. Ittner is looking at a population of 735 this year, down from last year’s 745 students. He said the decrease in enrollment is due to a large eighth-grade class that departed last year. This year, Ittner will bring in four new teachers, including a new math teacher and new assistant principal who will teach some English and language arts classes. “They’re all high energy, positive, love middle school kids, because they’re funny in some ways,” Ittner said. Another teacher was brought on to help out with the school’s strategic reading class, which aims at helping students who have fallen behind two grades or more when it comes to their reading skills. All four schools in the Auburn Union School District have the strategic reading classes. “It teaches fluency, but also vocabulary and how to break down words, prefix, suffix, and then you tend to be a better reader and then you can comprehend it,” Ittner said. “That can be a problem for a kid in a social studies class who is all of the sudden struggling with his reading and it takes him two hours longer to do his or her homework.” Since Ittner has been principal at E.V. Cain, he has noticed an increase in participation from the school’s minority students. When he got there very few participated in any extra curricular activities. “They just didn’t feel connected to the school,” he said. That was until four years ago when Hispanic students at E.V. Cain started a soccer program, which is still going strong today. “Now we have kids playing every sport or doing band or choir or participating in the plays or dance team, it’s neat,” Ittner said. “Now it doesn’t matter what ethnicity you are, you’re just an E.V. Wildcat.” Back to school night at E.V. Cain Middle will be held on Aug. 21 at 6 p.m. Contact Amber Marra at amberm@goldcountrymedia .com.
