Meister wins masters title, meets Mancuso
By: Sara Seyydin Journal Staff Writer
Brad Meister is still basking in the glow of his US Ski and Snowboard Association Overall National Speed Series M5 Championship. He is also a little star struck. As part of his victory, Meister, 48, of Auburn was invited to be a part of the race crew at US Ski Nationals in Winter Park, Colo. Meister had the honor of slipping the Giant Slalom and Super G courses before the U.S. Ski team raced. He also took the chance to hobnob with some ski elite, including Squaw Valley native Julia Mancuso. “It’s fun cruising down the course without poles doing your best to smooth out the ruts so the racer has a smoother ride,” Meister said. “Every coach and USSA official is watching you to make sure you are doing it right. I got rave reviews on my slipping skills and was happy to be a part it.” Meister ran into Mancuso’s mom on the chairlift, which provided the opportunity for him to meet the Olympian later on. “I was talking to Julia and her mom came up and said, ‘This is Brad. He skis at Sugar Bowl and he won the (M5 Championship).’ “Then Julia smiled and said,” ‘Nice,’” Meister recounted. “Pretty cool just being around her and the team.” Mancuso went on to finish first in the Giant Slalom and Super G races, adding a 12th national title to her repertoire. Mancuso finished third overall in the World Cup Series and won the last downhill race of the year. Fans can meet Mancuso at Squaw Valley as they kick off the spring ski season with a Julia Mancuso Kiss My Tiara Pool Party Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m. With island-inspired reggae by DJ Tracy Too Dread, $5 Malibu Mango Mai Tais and a poster signing session by Mancuso from 2 p.m. to 3. It’s an all out bash to celebrate the record 691 inches of snowfall that could extend the ski season into late May. You can also join Mancuso for a run down the mountain directly after. Donavon Frankreiter, a folk rock acoustic artist will be playing a free concert on the KT Sundeck from 4 p.m. to 5:15. For more information visit www.squaw.com.
