The former Sierra College and Del Oro football star facing charges of extortion is scheduled to appear in Auburn’s Placer County Jail courtroom Friday. Chad Richard Mowry, 26, was arrested July 29 for allegedly trying to extort an Auburn resident who was hiring exotic dancers. Mowry told the resident he knew the dancers were hired to perform sexual acts and as a law enforcement officer he could make the charges go away if the victim paid him money, according to Sgt. Dave Lawicka of the Auburn Police Department. According to Jeff Tisdel, head football coach for Sierra College, Mowry was a starting middle linebacker in 2003 and 2004. He was a Del Oro High School graduate, where he also played football. Mowry is being charged with burglary, extortion, attempted extortion, attempted grand theft and impersonating a police officer, all felonies. Mowry is scheduled to appear in court for an early status conference at 8:30 a.m. Friday in Auburn’s Placer County Jail courtroom. Timothy Balcom, Mowry’s attorney, declined to comment Tuesday about the case or his client’s current demeanor. Mowry is currently out of custody on a $25,000 bail. ~Bridget Jones
