Mullen delivers for Del Oro
Thomas Mullen hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the top of the sixth and the Del Oro High baseball team won its fourth straight, 6-4 at Roseville Tuesday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles seized control in the three-game series, which will decide the Sierra Foothill League’s third and final Sac-Joaquin Section Division II playoff participant.
The final two regular-season games will be played in Loomis. Del Oro (12-10-1, 8-8 SFL) only needs to win one of the two to earn the last postseason berth.
Roseville (12-13, 7-9 SFL) broke a 2-2 tie with a run in the fifth off Cooper Johnson, who threw 5 2.3 effective innings to earn the win. He allowed four hits, walked four and struck out three.
Mullen, the Eagles’ No. 9 hitter, slugged his first homer of the season after Freddie Cargile singled and John Akin took first base on a misplayed third strike.
Brian Bynum pitched 1 1/3 innings to earn the save for Del Oro.
Bynum, Cargile and Mullen each had two of the Eagles’ nine hits.
The game ended on an odd play. Mullen threw out a runner trying to steal second with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.
Foresthill 4, Delta 3 at Foresthill — Jon McCann struck out nine in six innings and Dave Whitsett had three hits, including a double as the Wildfires held off Delta.
McCann gave up just two hits and walked three and Whitsett pitched the seventh inning to get the save.
Mike Mangone had two hits for Foresthill (7-6 overall, 4-5 Central Valley Christian League). Chase Pack, Braeden Eldridge and Travis Greene had one hit apiece.
The Wildfires will wrap up the season Thursday against Forest Lake Christian.
