Nation divided cannot stand

Our common welfare should come first. Our future welfare and security depend on unity. The old saying, “a house divided soon falls” is a truism of life. Success is only achieved when people work together, whether that is in a family, a community or a nation. The senseless shooting in Arizona of a congresswoman puts all our elected officials at risk. The rhetoric and vitriol has gotten out of hand. This Tea Party craziness, birther nonsense and fear of Muslims is scaring the American people unnecessarily. There will always be the lone wolf. But sometimes it takes a lone wolf to bring us all to our senses. Whatever happened to love your neighbor? CAROL WALLGREN, Auburn
