Nevares carries Wildfires in opener

Corrine Nevares struck out 16 of the 27 batters she faced and had two extra-base hits and drove in two runs to help her own cause as Foresthill beat visiting Woodland Christian 13-5 in its season opener Tuesday.
The Wildfires broke a 7-5 game open with a six-run sixth inning. Caitlin McCann went 3-for-4 with a triple and 3 RBIs. Nevares doubled and tripled and Sadie Stroup also had two hits for Foresthill.
Nevares was dominant in the circle, talking only two and allowing two earned runs in a complete game.
The Wildfires will host Argonaut Thursday in nonleague action.

Bear River 13, El Dorado 3 at Placerville — The Bruins pounded out 17 hits to beat the Cougars in a five-inning game abridged by the mercy rule.
Stephanie Ceo went 3-for-3 with a homer and 2 RBIs. Katie Mathis went 4-for-4 with a double and 2 RBIs. Alyssa Reina went 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs. Courtney Ceo, Courtney Edwards and Hallie Heath all added two hits apiece.
Erin Nichol struck out six and walked two in a two-hitter, the only major blemish coming in the second when El Dorado’s Brooke Andrew hit a bases-loaded triple.
Bear River (5-1 overall) travels to Woodland this afternoon.
