Journal correspondent Kirsten Read caught up with one of E.V. Cain’s new teachers before school started today. Who: Jeffery James Age: 28 School: E.V. Cain Charter Middle School How long have you been teaching? This will be my third year. What subject do you teach and how do you make it interesting? This year I’ll be teaching eighth grade U.S. history from the Native Americans to the end of the Civil War. I try to do new things in the classroom every day. Why did you choose to teach in Auburn? I’m originally from Chico but my last job was in Southern California. This job was closer to my family. I really like the area. Auburn reminds me a little bit of Chico. I like the small-town atmosphere. What is your favorite part about teaching? The interaction with the students. I like getting to know every one over the course of the year and getting to see where they end up going. I keep in contact with a lot of students. What do you like to do for fun? I do a lot of biking, running and reading. I just moved here and I’m looking forward to exploring the area.
