Non-resident accident fee when Placer Fire rolls wins supes support

Placer County Fire will start billing insurers by July for auto-crash call-outs caused by out-of-area drivers. The Board of Supervisors voted 5-0 in support of a plan that is expected to bring in $120,000 in its first year. Auburn-area Supervisor Jim Holmes, noting the 16 years he served on North Auburn’s Placer Consolidated Fire Protection board, said he was voting in favor of the insurance-company billing plan because of the costs involved in accidents and what impacts they have on revenues. Rui Cunha, Office of Emergency Services program manager, said charges that will be billed to insurance companies are in line with those already established by other districts in the county. Placer Fire would be charging a standard $400 for responding with a fire engine and three firefighters to the scene of an accident caused by an out-of-area driver with insurance. Placer County Fire provides service in North Auburn, Ophir, Christian Valley and Bowman in the Auburn area and several other communities elsewhere in the county. Auburn city motorists causing an accident in Placer Fire coverage areas would be billed through their insurance policies and not directly. Other areas not covered by Placer Fire – and subject to “visitor” fees for accidents – include Roseville, Penryn, Foresthill, Colfax, Loomis and Newcastle. Cunha said the fees would start being collected by July. In other board business: n The county has hired a new uniform rental and laundry service. Unifirst Corp. of Stockton was low bidder on the three-year contract. At $277,000, the bid beat out several other suppliers, including Aramark, which currently holds the contract. n Sequoia Pacific Builders was awarded a $2.3 million construction contract for the new Rocklin library. n Supervisors authorized a contract with The Hanna Group for construction management, inspection and materials testing services for the Foresthill Bridge seismic retrofit and painting project. The $200,000 contract is for pre-construction review services. Public Works Director Ken Grehm said plans are to advertise for bids this summer on the project. The estimated cost is about $70 million.
