O’Connor slips, but hangs on to top spot for Placer

Placer High sophomore Caty O'Connor missed her shot at a sweep of the Central Division II snowboard season, but her No. 1 seed at the state championships is secure. The defending state champion, O'Connor placed just 21st in slalom action at Boreal on Monday, but still won the Central Division II crown after winning every previous race. Senior Nicole Porata took second and will be right behind O'Connor at the California Nevada Interscholastic Ski and Snowboard Federation Championships March 5-6 at Northstar. Senior Hailey Stockman took fourth for Placer on Monday while freshman Emma Obray was 12th. The Colfax girls were led by Shelby Young, who finished ninth. Hannah West was 15th, Lisa Holm took 17th and Merrill Warren placed 19th for the Falcons. The Colfax boys had five boarders in the top 10, led by Mitchell Cohodes' third place finish. Danny Kern took fourth, Tim Holsworth was sixth, Drew Steinhoff took eighth and Will Hitchcock placed 10th. The Colfax team won the Boreal slalom in the boys and girls' combined scoring. Junior Chris O'Connor led the Placer boys, taking 11th. Pete Porata raced to 20th for the Hillmen. Daniel Price finished 21st for Bear River while teammate Ben Schenk was 29th. The Colfax squad finished second behind North Tahoe while Placer was third in the Central Division II team standings.
