How effective of a leader has President Obama been? During the 2008 presidential campaign Barack Obama made five key promises he wished to accomplish when he got to the White House. Promise: Close the Guantanamo Bay Detention Center. A few stragglers remain, but for all intents and purposes, Guantanamo is closed. Mission accomplished. Promise: Extend the Bush tax cuts for lower and middle class income-tax payers. The president was forced by Republicans to make a huge giveaway to the super-rich in order to pass the legislation. Obama accomplished his goal. Promise: Remove U.S. combat troops from Iraq. Recent announcements have the U.S. winding down the war in Iraq by year’s end. Promise kept. Promise: Provide a national health care plan that covers all Americans. He got a bill passed that covers 93 percent of citizens. Goal achieved. Promise: Take out Osama bin Laden, which he did. Yet, through all these accomplishments, you’ll never here a single Republican express appreciation for service rendered to the country. Ron Lowe, Nevada City
