There aren’t all that many opportunities out there to have a good time, catch some fish, partake in a great meal, and help out a great cause…all in the same day. But you can do just that when the AT&T Pioneers Striper Derby rumbles into Lovey’s Landing in Meridanon the Sacramento River April 27-28.
This year marks the 24th season that the derby has been held and it’s always a big hit – entries are limited to 250 anglers, so if you want in on the fun, it would behoove you to get signed up ASAP!
According to Colfax resident Harold McCoy, the event’s all-around big cheese, the AT&T Pioneers is a Placer Gold Life Member Club, non-profit volunteer organization comprised of both active and retired telephone employees.
“The Striper Derby is our biggest fundraiser of the year and all of the profits go back into our local communities to help those in need,” he says. “Some of the organizations we support with the money we raise include Placer County Search & Rescue, Sutter Auburn Faith Hospice, Sutter Auburn Faith Lifeline, Auburn Senior Center, the Ronald McDonald House of Sacramento, Camp McDonald at Eagle Lake, Salvation Army, Child Abuse Prevention, Talking Books for the blind and many more.”
Obviously, your support of the derby does a lot of people a lot of good. And, again, all you have to do is go have a good time and catch some fish!
Fishing is limited to the Sacramento River in Colusa, Sutter and Colusa counties and the limit is 2 stripers per day, per person. Because big female stripers are getting fewer in number these days, only male bass can be weighed in. Prizes will be awarded for the most total weight and the largest striper.
The entry fee is $50/person, which includes a derby hat plus breakfast and a killer steak dinner on April 27. A pretty sweet deal, indeed!
