Strong winds were creating pockets of power outages Thursday in Auburn and other areas of Placer County. With winds continuing to peak at 30-40 mph through the foothills and into the Sierra, Pacific Gas & Electric crews had dropped the number of customers without power in Placer County from 600 at midday to 140 by 5 p.m. PG&E spokeswoman Brittany McKannay said the power company would continue to keep working overnight on a number of sporadic outages caused mostly by downed trees and limbs or wires slapping against each other. Thirteen customers in Auburn were reported without power at 5 p.m. Colfax had six customers with their electricity out after 81 earlier in the day. Higher in the Sierra, Dutch Flat and Gold Run were hard hit around noon, with a total of 299 customers out of power. By 5 p.m., that number was down to about 50. McKannay said that PG&E was anticipating that the workload would drop Friday morning, with winds expected to diminish. – Gus Thomson
