Clark Pietromonaco showed up to Auburn Valley ready to play a round of golf. Apparently his clubs didn’t get the memo that Thursday was opening day for Pioneer Valley League play.

“We had kind of a funny situation happen,” said Placer coach Greg French. “Our No. 1 player, Clark, showed up in the parking lot and his clubs were in his father’s car, who was over at Folsom Lake Junior College. Clark had to play with a rental set, but he ended up shooting a 40. We didn’t play really good but we ended up winning.”

Daniel Gregg fired a 39 and Pietromonaco shot four over par as the Placer boys golf team cruised past Center, 213-289, in a PVL opener Thursday.

Logan Strange (43), Kyle Kelley (44) and Trevor Heath (47) rounded out the scoring for the Hillmen (3-2, 1-0).

French said it’s very difficult to be out on the links with clubs one isn’t familiar with.

“The fact of the matter is that he’s left-handed,” French said. “We were lucky that (Auburn Valley Pro) Rob Weizer went above and beyond and found him a set of left-handed rentals he could play with. Clark did a good job.”

Placer travels to The Ridge Tuesday afternoon to take on Colfax.

“It’s always a fun match,” French said. “We’re going to try to get over there this weekend to get a practice round in.”
