Pineiro’s 40 spark Hillmen

Placer High junior Isaiah Pineiro made up for the absence of a couple of key teammates, and then some Tuesday night in Woodland.
Pineiro exploded for 40 points and 15 rebounds as the Placer boys basketball team battled past the Wolves, 62-59 in overtime. Pineiro scored hit four free throws in overtime and added another field goal as the Hillmen improved to 13-4 heading into Pioneer Valley League play Friday night.
Junior Michael McNamara scored nine points and grabbed 12 boards for Placer, which played without seniors Cody Riggs and Alec Knox. Riggs was nursing an ankle injury and Knox missed the game with the flu.
Placer junior Peter Kean contributed three steals and four assists. Junior Brennan Entz hustled for three steals, including one in overtime that helped clinch the victory.
The Hillmen open PVL play at defending league champion Center Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Hillmen 20th at Mat Classic

The Placer High wrestling team tuned up for Pioneer Valley League action by taking 20th place with just nine wrestlers at last weekend’s Mat Classic at Granada High School.
Junior Mason Lenover had to top individual finishing, posting a 4-1 record and placing third at 170 pounds. Ryan Talley took eighth at 195 with a 3-2 record for the day.
Gama Gomez (132) and Michael Valdez (138) won three matches each. Will Thornton (152) posted two wins while Justin Mason (126), Jake Limon (145) and Brandon Rinaldo (182) had one win each.
The Hillmen will open PVL competition next Wednesday as they host Center.
