ROCKLIN — Senior right-hander Matt Ross pitched a no-hitter for the Placer High baseball team on Wednesday, striking out 11 batters in a 6-0 victory over host Whitney. “He was right on today,” Hillmen coach Larry Prewitt said of Ross. “Everything was working. He had a good fastball, good location, good offspeed (pitches) and a good curveball.” The only two batters to reach base against Ross were hit by pitches. Placer (5-3, 4-0 Pioneer Valley League) led 2-0 for most of the way after senior designated hitter Griffin Quick doubled home two runs in the first inning. The Hillmen gave Ross some additional run support with three in the sixth and another in the seventh. Junior shortstop Josh Klem was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Ross, senior catcher Joel Thys, senior first baseman Spencer Zaputil and junior third baseman Anthony Amara also collected hits for the Hillmen. Colfax 12, Lincoln 7 at Lincoln — Senior second baseman Michael Miller and sophomore shortstop Scott Wright each went 3-for-4 at the plate as the Falcons posted their first win of the season. Senior catcher Nick Turcotte was 2-for-4 with a two-run home run for Colfax (1-5, 1-3 Pioneer Valley League). Senior right-hander Kyle Paskey earned the victory on the mound. Boys volleyball Nevada Union 3, Placer 0 at Auburn — Junior outside hitter Conner McKenzie’s team-high seven kills weren’t enough to keep the Placer High boys volleyball team from falling to visiting Nevada Union Wednesday night at Earl Crabbe Gym. The Miners won 25-17, 25-18, 25-21. Senior middle blocker Jeff Patton added six kills and six blocks for the Hillmen (7-7, 4-4 Sierra Foothill League). Junior outside hitter Brenden Lewis finished with three kills and two blocks. Junior setter Josh Newton dished out 16 assists for Placer.
