Hillmen programs to be ultimate winner in Saturday 'Casino Night'
The Power Pub and Event Center will be transformed into a casino for a fundraiser to benefit Placer High School Athletics, Saturday night. Casino Night on the Hill will feature casino games, food and drinks, a silent auction and raffle prizes to raise funds to keep all sports programs at Placer. Placer High Principal Peter Efstathiu said that with a recent American Civil Liberties Union court case banning schools from charging fees to play sports and budget cuts in education, Placer has been hit especially hard this school year. Less than 50 percent of the funds needed to keep all programs up and running were contributed, as compared to 80 percent last year. While some sports like football, which brings in large profits from gates and snack bars, haven’t been hit as hard, others like swimming and track are hurting for funds. “It’s going to help the ones who need it the most,” Efstathiu said. “Smaller sports don’t have that kind of audience base. For $32 and some change you can have a really fun night. It will help out sports who don’t have that kind of venue.” Placer has already made drastic cuts from the athletics budget this spring. Efstathiu said that almost all transportation for spring sports teams has been left up to parent drivers. The goal for the fundraiser is to raise $5,000-$10,000, according to Efstathiu. Some of those proceeds will be generated from a silent auction. Items up for bid will include a big screen TV and various trips. Efstathiu said that at a meeting on Wednesday there was even talk about the possibility of someone donating a new car. Efstathiu said that if the Casino Night is successful there will be no need to eliminate any sports teams at Placer. “I refuse to pick and choose sports to be cut when I know the possibility of a community like Auburn,” Efstathiu said. “There is more to education than academics. Over 50 percent of our students play a sport. It helps them stay on task and in touch.” While tickets will be available at the door on Saturday, Efstathiu said that for organizing purposes, attendees are asked to purchase them ahead of time.
