Ryan Mason came up big as the Placer High baseball team closed out a perfect week in Pioneer Valley League play to vault into second place in the standings. Facing Bear River, Mason tossed a complete-game shutout and struck out 12, including the final eight batters he faced. A.J. Sanchez, who threw a gem against the Bruins, gave the Hillmen all the offense they needed with a solo home run in the third inning. Todd Valliere added an RBI-single in the sixth to score pinch-runner Jake Callahan. Michael Reale doubled to set up the insurance run. Placer (7-4 PVL) will square off against league-leading Lincoln (8-3) twice next week, beginning Tuesday in Lincoln.
