Placer boys dominate at PVL opener

The Placer High boys assumed their usual position atop the Pioneer Valley League cross country standings after the first race of the season Wednesday at Gibson Ranch. The Placer girls have some rare catching up to do after the PVL opener. Senior Christian Finkbeiner raced to the individual title, finishing the three-mile course in 16 minutes, 55 seconds to lead the Hillmen. Junior Gama Gomez took second in 17:19, junior Viktor Dorofeyev was third in 17:35 and Mauricio Vera was fourth in 17:38. Cameron Brown rounded out the scoring with a seventh place showing, in 18:33. Placer sophomore Zach Stelzer sat out with an illness. Placer senior Christina Winters won the girls’ race in 20:47, but Bear River edged out the Hillgals for the team victory. Placer’s Ruth Braica was second in 21:32. Kristen Hiatt (22:22) placed seventh, Kailee Warren (22:41) was ninth and Macaylea Mitchell (22:45) placed 10th. Placer’s frosh/soph. squad won, sweeping the top five spots in the race. The Placer frosh/soph. girls team also won. Colfax will host the second PVL meet of the season on Oct. 12.
