Placer-Colfax boys hoops showdown has major PVL implicationsBy: Journal sports staff
Isaiah Pineiro and the Placer Hillmen boys basketball team head to Colfax Friday in hopes of avenging a prior loss to the Falcons in Auburn.
With Placer (17-6, 4-2 Pioneer Valley League) and Colfax (18-5, 4-2) both trailing Lincoln (18-5, 5-1) in the league standings, Friday's 7 p.m. tilt will likely eliminate the loser from contention of the PVL crown.
“Every game is huge from here on out,” Colfax coach Mike O’Connell told Gold Country News Service. “In this league, you had better show up to play every night.”
The Falcons, who have lost league games to Foothill and Lincoln, beat the Hillmen 64-49 in convincing fashion on Jan. 15 at Earl Crabbe Gym.
Placer, which also lost in league play to Center Wednesday, fell behind early last time out against Colfax because of Taylor Dorsey’s hot three-point shooting.
Dorsey finished the night with a team-high 21 points behind 5 of 7 shooting from downtown.
Pineiro went off for a game-high 24 points, while Colfax’s Will Buell fueled the rest of Colfax’s scoring attack with an 18-point performance.
The Buell-Pineiro matchup of both teams’ big men — who are arguably the two best players in the PVL — figures to be the most exciting one to watch when the two rivals take the court.
