Placer, Del Oro Host Girls Hoop Tournaments
The girls take over center stage for foothills hoops this weekend as a pair of area tournaments open three-day runs Thursday afternoon.
At Placer High in Auburn, the Coach “G” Memorial Tournament will be hosted by the Lady Hillmen. The tournament is played in memory of former Placer assistant coach Gino Linarez who passed away after a battle with cancer in 2011.
“I think we have a great tournament field,” said Placer coach Tony Camillucci. “It should be very competitive. Five of the teams have .500 or better records.”
Meanwhile, in Loomis, Del Oro will be hosting its Lady Eagle Invitational. Seven returning teams and newcomer Bishop Manogue of Reno will throw their hats into the ring.
“I like our tournament field this year,” said Del Oro coach Mike Takayama. “We have some good match-ups.”
Here’s a quick look at both tournaments:

A pair of Pioneer Valley League contenders, Bear River (8-0) and the host Lady Hillmen (7-1) look to be the teams to beat in this weekend’s event.
Bear River has won two tournaments already this month at American Canyon and Marysville. The Lady Bruins are led by Kaitlyn Reina (14.0 ppg) and Savannah Welz (11.5 ppg).
Placer, meanwhile, has used a balanced attack led by Maddie Graham, Kerry McCullough, Kirsten Schauble, Arianna Jensen and Baylee Vanderdoes to get off to their good season start.
In first round match-ups, Foresthill (2-3) tips off the tournament at 3:30 p.m. Thursday against defending tournament champion Rio Americano (5-2). The Raiders are led by senior guard Elizabeth Moulton who is averaging 16 points an outing. Rio topped Del Campo, 46-43, in the 2011 tournament finale.
Elsewhere, Del Campo (1-4) meets Foothill (3-3) of Palo Cedro and the North Section at 5 p.m. and Bear River tangles with Rocklin (2-2) at 6:30 p.m.. Host Placer and Folsom (2-4) meet in the 8:00 nightcap.
The Bear River-Rocklin game could be the night’s best match-up as the Thunder have plenty of firepower to run with the Lady Bruins in the form of Kelsey Summers (12.5 ppg), freshman Jordan Purvis (10.0 ppg) and Lydia Summers (9.5 ppg).

Returning champion El Camino, which defeated PV, 47-42, in last year’s championship match, will open the tournament against Woodcreek (2-4) at 3:30 p.m.
Colfax (5-3) then draws Bishop Manogue of Reno (2-0) which annually is one of the top teams in the Northern Nevada AAA ranks. Del Oro (6-1) then meets Casa Roble (0-6) at 6:30 followed by Pleasant Valley (4-2) and Whitney (3-5) in the 8:00 finale.
