Placer fifth at Lawrence Miller; Branum takes Tim Brown

The Placer High wrestling team traveled to Martinez Saturday and brought home fifth place from the Lawrence Miller Invitational at Alhambra High School.
Josh Mason led the way with a runner-up finish at 113 pounds as he posted a 3-1 record. Will Thornton (152) and Mason Lenover (170) both placed third with 3-1 marks for the day. Gama Gomez (138) and Ryan Talley (195) each went 3-2 and both placed fourth. Jake Limon (145) was 2-2 and took fourth. Myles Lenover (160) wrestled to fifth with a 3-2 record. Mike Valdez posted a 2-1 mark to place seventh and Justin Mason was 1-2, placing eighth.
In the junior varsity ranks, Placer’s Hayden Mills and Jack Morris both went 5-0 on the day and won their brackets. Anthony Wong was 4-1, as was Juan Medrano, who won one match in triple overtime.
Branum wins at Tim Brown Memorial
Del Oro High senior Austin Branum toppled defending state champion Jake Elliott of Oakmont in the championship and took top honors at the Tim Brown Memorial Tournament in Sacramento Saturday.
Branum edged Elliott 4-3 in the final at 152 pounds and was named the Outstanding Middleweight at the prestigious event, which features more than 90 teams and 800 wrestlers from around the region. It was Branum’s third title at the Tim Brown Memorial.
Freshman Zach Ruyball wrestled to fourth place for Del Oro, which finished 10th as a team.
