Placer girls grab a share of PVL title on senior nightBy: Matthew Kimel, Journal sports editor
The night couldn’t have gone any better for the Lady Hillmen’s seniors.
Kerry McCullough scored 16 points, Lauren Collins chipped in with 11 and the Placer High girls basketball team clinched a share of the Pioneer Valley League title with a 52-44 come-from-behind victory over Foothill Thursday at Earl Crabbe Gym on senior night.
“It feels so good,” Placer’s Olivia Holmes said. “We work so hard all season. It was nice to win.”
Said coach Tony Camillucci: “I’m really proud of the kids, especially the seniors. They can come back anytime they want and look at the banner up in the rafters and say, ‘We were a part of that.’”
Ari Jensen had eight points and Elena Daniel also had eight for Placer (23-4, 8-2), which shares the league crown with rivals Bear River and Colfax.
Holmes said it doesn’t matter that her team will be sharing the title “because it’s not like it’s a third of a banner, it’s a whole banner.”
Placer trailed 26-23 at halftime but quickly grabbed a 41-32 lead by the end of the third quarter.
Foothill (8-15, 2-8), led by Zhane Washington (11 points) and Elisha Anderson (10), came within 41-38 with 4:56 to go before Placer pulled away again.
“I think that we just came out kind of lazy,” Holmes said. “In the second half we really picked it up. We really wanted that banner.”
The Lady Hillmen, who hope to have a top-four playoff seeding and a couple of more home games, now must wait until Feb. 19 for the playoffs to begin.
“We have next week off?” Camillucci asked the Journal when asked what his team’s plans were.
Camillucci, who appeared to not be a fan of the long layoff, said he’ll be holding daily practices up until the playoffs even though the school will take a week off for winter break.
“We’re taking tomorrow off, I’ll tell you that,” he said. “We’ve got a good, deep squad; we can scrimmage a lot and get healthy.”
