Placer girls pull away at Lincoln

The Placer High girls basketball team kept its postseason hopes alive Thursday night, using a big fourth quarter to pull away for a 41-30 win over host Lincoln. The Lady Hillmen outscored the Fighting Zebras 13-4 over the final eight minutes after Lincoln star Julia Lathrop fouled out in the fourth quarter’s opening seconds. “We got her in foul trouble early in the third quarter and as soon as they put her back on the floor we just went right at her,” Placer head coach Scott Barry said. Shelby Madigan had 13 points, seven rebounds and five steals to lead the Lady Hillmen, who improved to 9-13 overall and 7-3 in the Pioneer Valley League. Bailey Bill had eight points and eight rebounds, Kelsey Lardner finished with seven points and Kayla Reeves added six. Del Oro 55, Nevada Union 46 at Grass Valley — Senior Meghan Huckaby had a huge game with a career-high 26 points, including six 3-pointers. The Golden Eagles (22-1 overall, 10-0 Sierra Foothill League) moved within two wins of a third straight undefeated SFL season by fighting off the scrappy Miners. Katie Pulliam added 11 points for Del Oro, which will host Granite Bay on Tuesday. Bear River 60, Mesa Verde 48 at Lake of the Pines — Whitney Smith and Talore Spencer scored 14 points apiece as the Bruins overcame early foul trouble to hold off the visiting Mavericks. Jocelyn Fry, who finished with a team-high 10 rebounds, picked up her fourth foul before halftime, while Kelsey Uno sat with three as Bear River led 36-27 at the intermission. Melanie Fry scored 10 and Annie Osterholt added seven points. Smith had six rebounds. The Bruins improved to 16-9 overall and 7-3 in the PVL. Marysville 33, Golden Sierra 32 at Marysville — The Grizzlies were nipped on the road as their playoff hopes took a hit. Golden Sierra (12-12 overall, 8-2 Golden Empire League) will play at Encina next Wednesday.
