The young Lady Hillmen hung in there for the first half.

But the Whitney Wildcats’ experience was too much for Placer to overcome in a 2-0 loss at Railhead Park Wednesday afternoon.

Placer (1-6), which has eight freshmen on its varsity roster of 20 girls, was tied with Whitney (9-0--2) at halftime before the Wildcats found the back of the net twice.

While the Lady Hillmen have just one win thus far in preseason, coach Steve Cook said the team is learning valuable lessons out on the pitch.

“We’re just a young team,” Cook said. “We’re got lots of freshmen. We’re learning a couple of different systems. We showed a lot of heart today and played an outstanding first half. Then their experience kicked in. It was a learning experience.”

Cook said Brittany Bartle, Alex Lee and Mikayla Lopez all played well, as did Olivia Holmes, who just returned from basketball.

“We’re very happy to have her back,” Cook said of Holmes. “It made a difference.”

Placer hosts Cordova Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Railhead Park. The Lady Hillmen have three more tune-ups before Pioneer Valley League play starts on April 1.

“All of these games are preparing us for the PVL,” Cook said. “We don’t want to lose, but we are hanging in there. That’s what’s most important.”
