Placer goes 1-2 at Natomas tourney

The Placer High softball team exploded for 20 runs in its season-opener before dropping its next two games at the Natomas Tournament over the weekend. The Hillgals pounded out 19 hits in a 20-1 win over the host Nighthawks before falling to Shasta 6-4 and mustering just four hits in a 3-0 loss to El Camino Saturday. Jenna Knox struck out five in three scoreless innings against Natomas. Taylor Graham went 4-for-4 to lead Placer at the plate, doubling twice and driving in two. Hailey Gaffney also had four hits. Gaffney and Courtney Phillips finished with 5 RBIs apiece. The Wolves then scored two decisive runs in the sixth inning to hand the Hillgals their first defeat. Knox allowed four runs on four hits in four innings, walking two. Brooke Stufflebean took the loss, giving up two runs on two hits in two innings. Phillips had two hits, including a double, while Gaffney and K.C. Romero both drove in runs. The Eagles blanked Placer Saturday afternoon, holding the Hillgals to four hits – one each by Haley Tupen, Gaffney, Graham and Hailey Leggitt. Knox allowed only one run on five hits in four innings. Gaffney pitched the final 1 1/3. The Hillgals (1-2) travel to play Nevada Union Monday afternoon.
