Placer holds off Colfax

Tidd’s first-half goal lifts hopeful Hillmen
Travis Tidd’s breakthrough was all the Placer High soccer team needed to stay in contention in the Pioneer Valley League. Tidd scored in the 34th minute and the Hillmen held off Colfax 1-0 under the lights at Le Febvre Stadium Monday night. “Travis did some magic,” Placer head coach Mark Miller said. “He shot from pretty decent distance. It was a typical Colfax-Placer soccer game. Nobody’s going to give up, everybody’s going in hard on tackles.” The Hillmen outshot Colfax 12-10, and Placer goalkeeper Nigel Pell made nine saves, none bigger than his last. Pell saved a strong shot by Falcons forward Steven Smith in the final minute to preserve the win. Midfielder David Lanthier and sweeper Michael Manning played well in the loss for Colfax (7-9-1 overall, 2-4 PVL), which will play at Mesa Verde at 4. Placer (11-6-2 overall, 4-2-1 PVL) travels to Bear River Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
