Placer opens PVL slate with victory

CITRUS HEIGHTS — Junior outside hitter Sarah Francis led the Placer High girls volleyball team with four kills, six digs and two service aces Thursday night as the Hillgals defeated Mesa Verde 25-8, 25-14. 25-14 in their Pioneer Valley League opener. “We felt like we started league out strong,” Placer coach Jennifer Wright said. Junior outside hitter Emily Jones recorded three kills and three service aces for the Hillgals (4-1, 1-0 PVL). Senior setters Kelsey Lardner and Colleen Stafford combined for 16 assists. Placer’s junior varsity team won 25-12, 25-4, while the freshman team beat Mesa Verde 25-7, 25-4. Colfax 3, Bear River 1 at Lake of the Pines — Junior outside hitter Erika Heikila had 13 kills, two blocks and four digs to lead the Falcons past the Bruins 25-21, 25-21, 23-25, 28-26 in the PVL opener for both teams. Middle hitter Cassandra Campbell finished with 10 kills, three blocks and seven digs for Colfax (2-3, 1-0 PVL). Three other seniors also had a solid night for the Falcons: Outside hitter Holly Klang had seven kills and two blocks, right-side hitter Amber Kramer finished with four blocks, and libero Audrey Lewis had a team-high 17 digs. Sophomore setter Hailey Biles dished out 25 assists and also recorded seven digs, three kills and two blocks. Sophomore setter/middle blocker Iona Lofrano tallied eight kills, four blocks and six digs in addition to dishing out nine assists. “I was very impressed with Bear River,” Colfax coach Vicky Satterlee said. “We controlled games one and two, but they never gave up. They showed a lot of spirit and pushed us to our limit constantly.” Bear River’s junior varsity team won in two games, while its freshman team won in three. Del Oro 3, Oak Ridge 1 at El Dorado Hills — Junior outside hitter Belle Obert recorded 16 kills and two service aces as the Golden Eagles (11-2) topped the Trojans 25-20, 25-17, 13-25, 25-22 on Wednesday night. Senior outside hitter Emily Mattevi finished with 12 kills, while junior setters Bailey Humes and Emily Hentschke combined for 40 assists and eight service aces. Del Oro’s middle blockers, junior Hannah Oros and senior Aly Duffin, finished with six and five blocks, respectively. Senior libero Kate Kessler was the Golden Eagles’ leader in digs. In junior varsity action, Del Oro beat Oak Ridge 25-19, 26-24 to improve to 7-2. The Eagles’ freshman team, meanwhile, fell to the Trojans 25-23, 27-25.
