Placer pummels Foothill in finale
FOOTHILL FARMS — The last thing the Placer High football team needed was another wakeup call Friday night at Foothill. But Robert Dotson gave them one, awakening a monster that terrorized the Mustangs the rest of the night.
Dotson broke free and dashed 80 yards on the third play from scrimmage, with a hustling Jordan Ralls saving a touchdown. The Hillmen allowed little else in the first half while putting on an offensive show in their regular season finale.
Placer roared to a 56-14 victory to finish 4-1 in the Pioneer Valley League and 8-2 overall. The Hillmen earned a home game in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III playoffs. They will host Patterson at 7 p.m. at Le Febvre Stadium.
Junior Terrell Ayala had an interception to stop Foothill’s opening drive and it was all Placer from there. Brad Spangler had touchdown runs of 34, 30 and 40 yards in the first half as the Hillmen raced out to a 49-0 lead.
Placer scored seven touchdowns on 14 offensive plays in the first half. Spangler finished with 121 yards on four carries. Peter Denham completed 4 of 5 passes for 105 yards.
“We were really focused on ourselves tonight,” said Placer senior defensive lineman Will Slane, who had two sacks. “I think the Colfax game was a turning point for us. We’re excited about the playoffs. It’s my senior year. I’m just excited to play.”
Ayala had another interception in the second quarter and closed out the first-half onslaught with a 50-yard punt return for a touchdown.
Senior Joe Mangino had TD runs of 50 and 4 yards and Michael Robinson added a 17-yard TD burst as Placer finished Pioneer Valley League play 4-1 and placed second.
Placer’s first-team defense surrendered just two first downs to the Mustangs, who finished 0-5 in the PVL and 3-7 overall. Senior Tanner Jay had a sack and Tony Suverkropp had two tackles for loss in the first half.
Ralls had Placer’s second-half TD on a 42-yard run.
Placer 34, Foothill 24 — Placer’s JV squad beat Foothill 34-24 as Cameron Scott and Zach Phillips ran for two touchdowns apiece. The Hillmen finished 4-6 overall and 2-3 in the PVL.
Placer 41, Mesa Verde 20 — The Hillmen wrapped up their season with a big win Thursday in Citrus Heights as Frankie O’Neal led the charge with three touchdowns. Joshua Sweat, Logan Markstein and Tyler Gums added one TD apiece as Placer finished the season 6-4 overall and 3-2 in the PVL.
