Placer rolls, gets help from Colfax

The Placer High baseball team nailed down a postseason berth Tuesday and thanks to rival Colfax?s win over Lincoln, now has a shot at the Pioneer Valley League title. The Hillmen beat Foothill 11-1 in their final home game of the season. Senior Zach Hersch was 5-for-5 with a double and A.J. Sanchez settled down after a tough start as Placer improved to 9-5 in the PVL. Sanchez gave up hits to two of the Mustangs? first three hitters, but faced the minimum over the final five innings, giving up just one walk the rest of the way. Sophomore Todd Valliere finished 3-for-4 with a double and senior Kyle Wells was 2-for-2 with a double. D.J. Rodriguez was 2-for-2 and ended the game with his RBI-double that invoked the 10-run mercy rule in the sixth inning. Placer can clinch a share of the PVL title with a win at Foothill on Thursday as senior Ryan Mason takes the mound. Colfax 5, Lincoln 2 at Colfax ? The Falcons knocked off the Zebras to stay in the playoff hunt and make things interesting heading into the final day of PVL play. Colfax junior Ryan Glazener out-dueled Lincoln senior Jordan Albarron with six strong innings before senior Austin Young closed the game with a 1-2-3 seventh inning. Devon Loomis had a big game for the Falcons (8-6 PVL), going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. James Dean added a triple and David Campbell doubled. Roger Lillie and Michael Moore each had two-out, RBI-singles to spark Colfax. Lincoln will host Colfax on Thursday to close out the regular season. Center 2, Bear River 1 at Antelope ? The Cougars improved to 8-6 in the PVL with a hard-fought win over the Bruins, who fell to 5-9.
