Placer soccer rallies past River Valley, 2-1

The Placer High soccer team rallied for a non-league victory Wednesday in Yuba City, edging River Valley 2-1. Senior Rosie Havener scored in the first half, but the game was tied 1-1 at halftime. Senior Laurel Odom came up with the game-winning goal midway through the second half as the Hillgals improved to 2-2-2 on the season. Junior A.J. Furlong came up big filling in at goalkeepr as she made 10 saves. In junior varsity play, Tanille Simons and Rachel Starelli scored goals as Placer beat River Valley 2-0. Placer will host Colfax Friday to open Pioneer Valley League play. The game will begin at 7 p.m. at Le Febvre Stadium. Golf Bear River 209, Whitney 245 at Lake of the Pines — The Bruins were impressive in picking up their first win of the season. Taylor Daniels shot a 2-over-par 37 to earn medallist honors. Anthony Ertola and Hayden Lavelle both carded 42s. Brennan Southworth added a 43 and Andrew Jackson shot a 45 for Bear River (1-2). BASEBALL Whitney 3, Bear River 2 at Rocklin — The Wildcats edged the Bruins in the Pioneer Valley League opener for both teams. Whitney took a 3-1 lead after three innings. Bear River battled back with a run in the fourth, but could not tie it up. The Bruins (1-2 overall) will host Colfax Friday at 4 p.m. El Dorado 15, Colfax 0 at Colfax — The Cougars posted a resounding win in the Pioneer Valley League opener for both teams. El Dorado led 12-0 after two innings and allowed just one Falcon hit on the day. The Cougars improved to 6-0 overall. The Falcons (0-1) will play at Bear River Friday. Golden Sierra 5, Foothill 4 at Sacramento — The Grizzlies held off the Mustangs’ seventh-inning rally for an impressive non-league win on the road. Senior Matt Schendel went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Colin Barrett was 2-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Golden Sierra offense. Josh Kennedy added a double and Matt Wilfong knocked in one run. Giovanny Ramirez pitched four solid innings to get the win and Cole Frey pitched two scoreless innings of relief. Wilfong got the save for Golden Sierra (2-2). The Grizzlies will open Golden Empire League play Friday at Capital Christian at 3:30 p.m.
