Placer tennis a win from repeat

The Placer High tennis team is headed back to Stockton, looking to bring home a 24th Sac-Joaquin Section championship banner for its collection. Placer defeated Vista Del Lago 8-1 in Wednesday?s semifinal at home. Senior Steven Fraguglia lost at No. 1 boys singles, but his teammates swept the rest of the day?s matches. Blair Meyer cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles. Tine Hummel remained perfect on the season with a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 1 girls singles and Lindsay Holden added a 6-1, 6-3 romp at No. 2. In boys doubles action, Brendan Axelbaum and Andrew Carducci were 6-2, 6-3 winners at No. 1. Derek Ikeda and Andrew Dahlin rolled to a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 2. Claire McInerney and Kirstin Schauble had no trouble in their 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 1 girls doubles. Romy Behunova and Tawny Thompson grabbed at 7-6 (3), 6-3 win at No. 2. In mixed doubles, Kyle Fontes and Jessie Fry triumphed 7-6 (5), 6-2. Placer is seeking to win back-to-back section championship and its fourth in the co-ed Division III. The Hillgals girls program owns 13 section titles and the Hillmen won seven as a boys team. Placer will take on Escalon in the championship match Friday at 3:30 p.m. at Oak Park in Stockton. Del Oro 8, Vanden 1 at Loomis ? The Golden Eagles crushed the Vikings and now they?ll have to defeat their longtime rivals to bring home the school?s third section tennis banner. Del Oro will host Granite Bay today at 3:30 p.m. to decide the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II champion. The Eagles had no trouble against Vanden. Senior Brett Bacharach led the way with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles. Stenner Craig won a three-set decision at No. 3 singles. Paul Villa, Max Hennessy and Daniel Silva were wall straight-set winners. Cyrus Mann and Mitch Pingree pulled out a 6-2, 2-6, 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles. Kyle Borges and Taylor Butterfield won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2. Alex Sznaider and Gabriel Excurra added a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3 for Del Oro, which split matches against Granite Bay during the Sierra Foothill League schedule.
