Placer lost a tough one.

Eric Lawson and B.J Sidhu played well defensively Tuesday night, but their efforts weren’t enough for the Hillmen to overcome host Rio Americano in a Capital Athletic League volleyball loss, 16-25, 22-25, 25-21, 25-23, 15-11.

“They had a bunch of digs, each of them had at least 10-12 digs,” Placer coach Andy Klem said of Lawson and Sidhu. “They were all over the court and digging up loose balls. I was really proud of them.”

With the defeat, Placer fell to 6-6, 1-3 CAL on the year. The Hillmen also lost a non-league bout Monday night at Rocklin, 3-1, where they nearly forced a fifth set.

On Saturday, the Hillmen won two out of three matches in reaching the title game of their own tournament. Placer picked up wins over Ponderosa and Del Oro before falling to league foe Whitney in the championship game of the gold division bracket.

“It was very entertaining,” Klem said of the tournament. “The win over Del Oro brought us a lot of momentum into the championship game. Unfortunately we played Whitney.

“We had a great time. A lot of good teams were here; Bear River, Whitney and Jesuit. It was good competition, a fun tournament.”

Placer plays at El Camino Thursday night, but first has what figures to be a useful practice today as middle hitters Tyler Linton and Daniel Dahlin are both making their returns to the team.

“It should do some good things for us in the backend of the season,” Klem said of the returning Hillmen.
