Placer volleyball rolls past Rosemont

Bear River gets win at Sonora

The Placer High volleyball team bucked the seedings and rolled into the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III semifinals on Thursday in Sacramento.
The sixth-seeded Hillgals swept No. 3 Rosemont 25-15, 28-26, 25-20 to land in the semifinals for the third time in four seasons.
Placer rallied out of a 5-0 hole in the opening game to win easily. In Game 2, the Hillgals were down by double-digits before rallying. They trailed 24-17, then reeled off seven straight points to tie the game before eventually winning 28-26. Placer jumped out to an 8-0 lead in Game 3 and held on for the sweep.
Senior Michaela Leonard dropped 10 kills to lead Placer (22-8). Lauren Collins and Allison Alvarez added five kills apiece and Gabby Orteza served up four aces for the Hillgals.
Placer will play at No. 2 Vista Del Lago on Tuesday. The Eagles knocked the Hillgals out of the playoffs last season.
Bear River 3, Sonora 1 at Sonora — The Bruins survived the long road trip and knocked off the No. 4 seeded Wildcats to advance to the Division IV semifinals. Bear River (26-9) will play at No. 1 Escalon on Tuesday.
Junior Kaya Johnson dished out 45 assists, 17 of them to senior Katie Tomkiewicz, as Bear River won 25-19, 21-25, 25-20, 25-22.
Kirsten Pereira added 15 kills and Sara Schell had 12. Teryn Rath came up big down the stretch in the fourth game and finished with eight kills.
Bear River trailed 18-13 in Game 4 before going on a 12-4 run to close it out.
